Abstracts

The Advance Care Planning International Conference 2025 brings together members of the international advance care planning community comprising healthcare and social service administrators, clinical practitioners, researchers, academics and policymakers.

 

The conference theme 'Are we there yet?' aims to interweave advance care planning best practices and research through cultural, personal, organisational, system, and societal lenses. It promises to stimulate insightful discussion and healthy debate, providing grassroots perspectives from consumers and health professionals. â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

We welcome submissions relating to the sub-themes indicated below.  More detailed guidance on the conference sub-themes is available here.

We want to hear diverse and insightful perspectives on good practice, new approaches, the latest research, current challenges or gaps, and success stories. Abstract submission options, presentation style options, and abstract evaluation criteria have been designed to facilitate the inclusion of diverse perspectives.

All submissions must: 

  • Be in English

  • Be submitted electronically via the presentation portal

  • Be completed in full prior to submission

  • Not exceed 400 words for written submissions

  • Be 3 minutes or less (video submissions)

  • Have a title of no more than 15 words

Two streams for abstract submission are available: a Scientific stream, and a Practice and Lived Experience stream. The Scientific stream is for reports of all types of research related to advance care planning. 

The Practice and Lived Experience Stream is for case studies and stories from practice, policy, or lived experience, and reflections on how these shape, inform, make a difference, or challenge advance care planning practice.

The streams have different abstract structure and evaluation criteria. Submissions from both streams will be considered for session presentations and posters. You will be required to select your preferred stream as part of the submission process.

Scientific Stream

 

Format:

  • Maximum of 400 words

  • Content to include: 

    • Aim/ topic/ research question/s

    • Content: Background, Methods, Results, Discussion – or other structure as appropriate

    • Unique contribution: What is the unique contribution of this submission? (Up to 100 words)

    • Implications: What are the implications for policy or practice? (A “so what” statement - up to 100 words)​

​Practice and Lived Experience Stream

 

Format:

  • Maximum of 400 words or 3 minute video

  • Content to include: 

    • Aim or purpose of the presentation 

    • Background: What is your context or setting; what inspired or influenced you?

    • Main text: Narrative summary of your experience and reflections on this. You may include Methods, Results, and Discussion if these are relevant, but this is not required.

    • Unique contribution: What is the unique contribution of this submission? (Up to 100 words)

    • Implications: What are the implications for policy or practice? (A “so what” statement - up to 100 words)

​​​​If you wish to submit a video rather than a written abstract, you will still need to complete all sections of the submission. In the Abstract field please paste a link to the address where your video can be viewed online.

Please note:

  • Time limit is 3 minutes. Further material beyond 3 minutes will not be taken into consideration.

  • Ensure the location of your video file is accessible to other users (check site and file sharing permissions)

  • Use one of the following formats: .mov, .mpg, .avi, or .mp4 (.mp4 preferred)

  • Review the image and sound quality to ensure your video can be seen and heard well.

Presentation Formats


Session presentations will be allocated 15 minutes presentation time, plus 5 minutes for questions. Further instructions will be provided to accepted presenters. 


Posters will be displayed digitally in the conference app. Some posters will be selected for a brief presentation within the conference program. Further instructions will be provided to accepted presenters. 
 

 

Terms & Conditions

By submitting to the Conference, you agree to the following terms and conditions:

  1. All communication regarding progress of your abstract(s) will only be sent to the first presenting author nominated in the abstract submission.

  2. Submission of an abstract does not constitute acceptance for presentation.

  3. Failure of presenters to obtain a visa will not constitute grounds for refund of any fees paid to the event.

  4. It is a requirement that all abstracts accepted for presentation and/or poster display must be delivered at the event by an author who has registered and paid a full event delegate registration fee and has done so on or before the stipulated registration date. Abstracts and presentations of authors who fail to comply with this registration requirement will be deleted from the program without notice.

  5. Presentations shall be delivered by a maximum of two (2) people. The presenting author/s named in the submission shall deliver the presentation, except in an emergency such as illness, where an alternative speaker may be considered.

  6. Submissions must be original work not previously presented elsewhere and must not include plagiarised content or any material generated by artificial intelligence without explicitly acknowledging the original author and source.

  7. Submissions that are revised, updated, or reworked versions of previous research outcomes will be considered; however, they must not be verbatim reproductions of previously published papers.

  8. Abstracts will be published in Conference material including, but not limited to the Delegate App.
